Ayers Rock, or Uluru lies in the Kata Tjuta National Park which is owned and run by the Aboriginal people of this region. One of the worlds largest monoliths Ayers Rock/Uluru rises out of the Australian desert and also is thought to extend below the surface some three and a half miles the monolith is one of the major tourism destinations in Australia.
Regarded as sacred by the local aboriginal owners Ayers Rock is not the only attraction in this region. Tour operators offered on this site will take you to Kings Canyon, the Olgas and take you exploring the four wheel drive Mereenie Loop, Kings Cattle Station and outback areas in this region if you wish.
Tours range from an overnight experience to a 2 day tour, a 3 day tour or a 5 day tour. Most tours depart from and return to Alice Springs which is what we recommend to you for a complete outback experience. You are able to fly directly into Yulara/Ayers Rock and most tours will pick up at Yulara however most tours must finish in Alice Springs and do not drop back at Ayers Rock. For a complete experience it is best to plan to start and finish in Alice Springs.

Ayers Rock was named after South Australian premier Sir Henry Ayers however the local aborigines had named Ayers Rock as Uluru long before the arrival of the first fleet.
The aboriginal people of Kata Tjuta maintain many sacred sites around Uluru and prefer that people do not climb the rock out of respect for their beliefs and culture. When the Australian government handed Ayers Rock back to the aboriginal people it was a condition set by the government that people be allowed to climb Ayers Rock.
The climb to the top of Ayers Rock crosses a dreaming trail that is important to the local aboriginal owners and people crossing this dreaming trail has been the cause of distress to the traditional aboriginal owners of Ayers Rock who are the gaurdians of these sacred sites.
Today some people respect the local aboriginal beliefs and some people do not and climb the rock. There are several deaths per year of people who climb Ayers Rock, caused mainly by heart failure so it is wise for you to be honest with youself about your fitness because the climb is a lot further than it looks when you are standing at the base of Ayers Rock.
